On this page you will find updates, announcements, and additional resources from Mrs. D'Amico's 7th grade classroom.
Happy New Year to all Nettle parents and students! I hope everyone enjoyed their breaks and is ready to dive back into writing, reading and social studies.
Coming back into class, we are beginning brand new units of study in all three classes. Here is a look at what we will be working on over the next few weeks. Social Studies: After wrapping up our study of Ancient Egypt, we are heading off to study Ancient Greece! From the unique geography of the civilization, to religion, government, and major conflicts, we will be studying a wide variety of topics. This unit of study will provide historical background for our work in both reading and writing. This week we will focus mainly on the geography of Greece and the early formation of government within Greek society. Reminder to students: There will be a section quiz on Friday. Please take time to review your notes and handouts each night. Writing: We have officially moved forward from our lengthy study of narrative writing, and are kicking off our new focus on informational writing. Together, we will read The Adventures of Ulysses in class. This text will then be the main focus of our writing assignment to create a companion book for Ulysses, which will include detailed analysis done by each student. This topic ties directly into our study of Ancient Greece. Although students will complete their reading in class, some writing assignments will be completed at home throughout the unit. Please look for announcements here for updates throughout the writing process. Reading: We will continue our study of The Adventures of Ulysses in reading class. In addition, students will be assigned new independent reading books this week to complete during their silent reading time in class. The focus of these stories will be A Hero's Journey. Students will begin the unit by defining a hero in their own terms, uncover the stages of a hero's journey, and identify the key characters that play a role in any hero's journey tale. Soon, students may begin to see that a hero's journey exists in everything from newspaper articles to movies! With so many exciting tasks in store, I am looking forward to a great January in room 202! Another Announcement: Next week all 7th Graders are scheduled to attend a field trip to the Museum of Science in Boston, If you plan on attending, please return your signed permission slips and payment to your homeroom teacher.
