This week, on Monday and Tuesday, the seventh grade Social Studies team will be assigned
an end of unit project to culminate our study of the Fertile Crescent. This assignment requires students to demonstrate their knowledge of the Fertile Crescent Civilizations through a two-part task:
Students have been asked to submit a Project Approval Form that outlines their project plan by Friday November 4th. The completed project (both tasks) are due in class on:
Complete project guidelines can be found in the Social Studies section of this website. Please be sure to check in with your child to see what topic and project option(s) they have selected, and encourage them to work on the assignment over the next two weeks. Here is a look at what wee are working on this week:
Reading: This week we are focused on THEME. Specifically, how an author develops theme throughout the course of a novel. Students will apply their knowledge to their dystopian novels each day. Homework this week: 1. Complete your weekly page goal before class on FRIDAY. Be prepared to meet with your group for your book club meeting. 2. Article of the Week assignment due on Friday. Be sure to complete and submit both the reading and writing portions of the assignment. Writing: This week we are taking a fresh look at Dystopia, providing a new model for students to look at and apply to their writing, by reading, analyzing, and responding to the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. Social Studies: We are winding down our study of The fertile Crescent over the next two week. This week, we take a closer look at the Phoenician society and their impact on the Mediterranean world. Students will study this group through a closer look at their trade, colonies, and language. Homework this week: Section quiz on Friday. Review each night. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Student will be assigned a Unit Project for the Fertile Crescent this week. ELA: 1. Review Peer Feedback and Create a Revision To Do List. 2. Continue drafting your story to prepare to work on your ending tomorrow. Reading: 1. Social Studies: Prepare for your Hammurabi's Court Case by writing out YOUR lines. We will present next class! Homework for tonight is as follows:

ELA: 1. Complete plot diagram, if needed. 2. Write a 1 sentence summary of your story. Reading: 1. Stay on track to complete your weekly reading goal by FRIDAY. Reading: New Article of the Week assignments have been distributed in class today. Please use your time wisely throughout the week to prioritize the assignment. Both reading and writing pieces are due in class on FRIDAY. Writing: Write a 1 paragraph situation (flashback) that describes a significant event in your character's life that has led your character to become the rebel they are today. Social Studies: Section Quiz on FRIDAY. Please review your notes throughout the week. There are a lot of new things coming into our classroom! We are kicking off our new units this week in both ELA and Social Studies. We are also starting a new weekly homework assignment in Reading Class. Here is a look at where we are headed: ELA: Students will begin brainstorming their new writing unit: Dystopia! Students will write short stories that highlight a key issue they believe exists in our society today. The topics and ideas that I have seen so far are amazing! I cannot wait to see where our stories take us! READING: This week, students are introduced to the elements of dystopia. The work we are doing in reading will directly support our writing efforts. Next week, students will be assigned their new reading groups. Our focus will be Dystopian Book Clubs! This week we kick off a brand new reading assignment: The Article of the Week. At the beginning of each week, students will be assigned a new article to read and respond to using our CLOSE READING strategies. How students choose to prioritize nightly assignments is up to them, but ALL pieces of the assignment--Reading and Writing--are DUE at the start of class each FRIDAY. Resources and Materials for the Article of the Week Can be found here. Social Studies This week we are entering into our first civilization: Mesopotamia! Students will discover how this civilization came to exist, the notable achievements of each empire, and the factors that led to its downfall. NOTE: This week's section quiz will be held on MONDAY due to the short week. Students should complete the Where in the World? Activity they began in class for homework. Homework for tonight is as follows:
ELA: COMPLETE your polished draft of your Personal Narrative. Your final copy should include a COVER that has the following information: Title Byline (Your name) An image that represents your story A brief summary of the story Remember to put your best effort into your final drafts! Your cover should be colored and show your careful work. I can't wait to see everyone's final products! Social Studies: Chapter Quiz on TUESDAY 10.11 for ALL sections. Please review by: - Studying Note Packets - Completing Review Questions in your textbook (Can be accessed online) - Review and correct Section Quizzes PUBLISHING PARTY TOMORROW: After all of your hard work preparing your Personal Narratives, we deserve to share our stories and celebrate! If you would like to bring a snack, drinks, or candy in to share with the class, please bring them tomorrow. Don't forget to bring necessary serving supplies for your treats. This week is going to be a busy but exciting week in our classroom, as we wrap up our current units in ELA, Reading, and Social Studies. Here is a look at what we are working on: ELA: This week we will be finalizing our personal narratives through peer edits and final revisions. Students will write their polished drafts that incorporate all of the unique revisions that we have worked on throughout the writing process. Our PUBLISHING PARTY will take place in writing class on THURSDAY! Please feel free to bring in a treat to share with the class. The students have worked so hard on this assignment, and I cannot wait for them to share their final products! TONIGHT'S HOMEWORK: 1. Review the Round Robin Sheet from our Peer Feedback Activity. 2. Prepare a To Do list of your final revisions. READING: This week, students are wrapping up the first round of their group reading novels, while practicing specific close reading strategies to help them interact with their readings in a meaningful way. Their close reading work will carry on throughout the year with our new weekly reading assignments: The Article of the Week. With this assignment, students will read, respond, and write about a unique, current event topic each week. Their goal is to regularly practice engaging with a text beyond a simple summary. More details will be provided next week! Social Studies: This week students will complete the second unit of the year: The Beginning of Civilizations. Thus week, we will specifically focus on the advantages of a settled life. We will also the Bronze Age. Due to the half day on Friday, and the long weekend. The Chapter 1 Test will be held in class on TUESDAY October 11th. Students should review their unit activities, note packets, and prior quizzes to review.
